In the year 1999, the United States mint proposed a
new program that set a path to produce a new quarter every ten weeks in
honor of the fifty states. This program was put together to honor one
state every ten weeks to produce a total of fifty quarters. The
quarters are struck in the order of the states birthday with Delaware
being the first quarter since it was the first state to sign the
constitution, and Hawaii the final state quarter minted since it was
the last state to join the Union. The program started in 1999 and will
end in 2008.
